Some people have a visceral reaction to the sport of
Competitive Eating. I get it. It’s grotesque, wasteful, difficult to watch, and
not particularly useful. Much like professional football. But it is a sport, by any definition. And as
with any sport, a few elite athletes are astonishingly good at it.
Over the next few months, while waiting for Slider to be published in September, I’ll
be paying tribute to a few of the heroes of the sport, all of whom are mentioned in the book. Let's start with the Wayne
Gretzky of Professional Competitive eating: Joey “Jaws” Chestnut.
